High School for the Gifted or PTNK (Vietnamese: Trường Phổ Thông Năng Khiếu) is a public high school located in Ho Chi Minh City , Vietnam.

Established in 1996, the school is the only high school associated with the Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City. The school is specialized for gifted students who show their exceptional talents in academic fields such as basic sciences, social science and languages. The school is considered one of the top high schools in Vietnam. The mission of the school is to offer the best programs for its students to achieve excellence in their talented field and aid its students to participate in regional, national, and International Science Olympiad.

History

After reviewing national top programs in Mathematics and Informatics at universities in the north of Vietnam, including the HUS High school for gifted students and the High School for Gifted Students, Hanoi National University of Education, the Mathematics Department of National University has filed to open a specialized institution in Mathematics and Informatics that prepare students for their department program. On 14/07/1993, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Tran Chi Dao signed the decision to establish "High school specializing in Mathematics of Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City."

Curriculum

The school offers education of subjects: Mathematics, IT, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Literature and English. To be a student of High School for Gifted, an applicant needs to pass a strict exam. Annually, about 30 top students from approximately 4000+ will be admitted for each subject. The requirements for entrance exams are subjected to change each year. However, the specialized subject score cannot be lower than 6 out of 10. The total score varies from 24 to 30 depending on what subject students choose to take. Teachers are usually professors from various campuses of National University of Vietnam. Furthermore, for specialized subjects, students are supposed to learn up to freshmen or sophomore level in college. The school is best known for its record in a lot of national and international competitions.
